The New Web Measurement: Attention

I loved hearing this. Nielsen/NetRatings are moving to use total time spent by users of a site as its primary measurement. A lot of forward thinking companies are fniding ways to hold someone's attention for a certain period of time - there is no correlation between that and how many new pages they look at. What about AJAX ? See how you can move things around on iGoogle personalized pages ? This is a very cool method of transmitting and receiving small bits of information without loading a new page. The old page view system would only measure that as one page. So even if someone was watching a video on a page or playing a game within a page, up until now, it was counted as one page.

We have moved from hits to pages to attention.

So, we are now going to move to an attention era. There will be winners and losers. My belief is that companies that have bulging page views due to their free mail services - such as Yahoo and MSN - will be hit the most. Big winners will be online game companies and video sites.

HBO Moves: John Has To Go Back To Cincinnati.. Or Was He From Space. HBO Please Keep Conchords

HBO hoped to replace Soprano's with some Deadwood-ish (same writer), left of centre action with John From Cincinnati. But, if you are going to take risks, it aint always going to work out. John is gone.

Back in the summer of 2004, we were trying to get people to watch Entourage. It was coupled with Ali G on HBO on a Sunday night. Couldnt get many to watch either... They only had an 8 episode run each. Now, BOOM and 'Niiiice' are part of conversations you hear in bars.

Entourage has a new partner on Sunday nights. And, hopefully they are here to stay as well. Flight of The Conchords were a stand up novelty band doing the comedy stages around the world. Now a la Seinfeld and Curb Your Enthusiasm, they have done a show loosely based on their own lives. Its crazy original. They will be walking down the street talking about the latest girl that dumped them (of course, they were never going out) and they will break out in song. Classic lyrics. This song was far and away the smash of the season:

Halo 3 Xbox Game Looking For Biggest Debut Ever... Including Movie Releases: $155m First Day!

On Sept 25 the third installment in the Halo saga is released. Microsoft are reportedly aiming for it to sell $155m in its first 24 hours. This will make it the biggest debut of an entertainment property ever. That would beat out Spidey 3 who took $131m in it's first weekend. Looks like Sargent Nelson might wrap up Spidey with some insiders saying it could even get up to $170m.
